Trike Town Is Open!

We are thrilled to announce the opening of Trike Town, our premiere new outdoor facility. Our Grand Opening Ceremony was held on Friday, June 5, 2009 (re-scheduled from June 3, due to rain), and the sun happily shone for us that day!

About 100 families, friends, supporters and members of the media gathered near the colorful ribbons across Trike Town's entrance gate for the brief ceremony. School Director Ellen Barnes greeted the crowd and talked about Trike Town's development from a "wishful dream" to a reality, thanking many of those who helped make it possible, especially Ann Sutherland, Program Director. Ann, who served as Jowonio's manager of the project, then recognized Trike Town's architects, Mariane Miller and A.J. Miller & Associates, along with Tom Lee and Lee Construction, the construction company for the project. Ann also thanked Dan Reeder who created the original model for Trike Town and helped in numerous ways throughout the process, Nate Bliss who built the "Main Street" village, Steve Synder and Industrial Contracting, Inc. for construction of the barn, and George Baldwin and the Empire State Contractors Apprentice Program for Trike Town's Gas Station and Post Office.

Next on the program was Peter Irwin, Director of Development for Friends of Jowonio, who thanked Trike Town's major contributors. These generous organizations and individuals are listed on Trike Town's large entrance sign, and a permanent Donor Book just inside the main entrance thanks all who helped support the project. (The complete Trike Town Contributors List also appears in the green box at right.)

We were delighted to have representatives from two of Trike Town's major grantors in attendance. Peter Dunn, President and CEO of the Central New York Community Foundation, spoke about the Foundation's commitment to supporting organizations and projects that help build community, citing Jowonio and Trike Town as examples. Janet Hollingsworth from CVS Caremark Charitable Trust then presented Ellen and Peter with a $15,000 "giant check"!

As the ceremony drew to a close,
the students were lined up and ready to roll.

And then the big moment arrived!
With a little help from Ellen Barnes and teacher Emily Barrett,
two children from the Earth Room performed the
ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

And the students began triking in!

Kids rode many different kinds of trikes onto the track.

They pedaled over the bridge,

After a great ride,

...

everyone visited the Trikers Cafe,

got some free ice cream, donated by Gannon's Isle,

..

and gathered with their friends on Trike Town's new stage area.

What is Trike Town?

A long-time dream of Jowonio School Director Ellen Barnes and the school's therapy staff, Trike Town is a unique outdoor facility for trike riding, physical therapy, performances, and social learning for young children. Trike riding is an ideal activity for developing a range of gross motor skills, as well as endurance, balance and general coordination, and is particularly helpful for children with special needs.

Jowonio’s Trike Town includes almost 400 feet of paved trike path that pass by shops on a child-sized " Main Street", go through a village park, under and over a tunnel, past a bog, and beside a barn. Crosswalks and road signs help build awareness of road safety. At one end of Trike Town, a child-sized stage is surrounded by an amphitheater providing audience seating for spontaneous and planned performances, and also serving as a perfect slope for sledding in the winter months.

Designed by the architectural firm of A.J. Miller & Associates, and constructed by Lee Construction, Trike Town is a premier facility that will benefit Jowonio students for many years to come. With more attention focused on increasing the fitness level for all, but particularly within the special needs populations, Trike Town will help to foster an interest in cycling as a life-long activity. Trike Town also promotes social skills development, a paramount goal for children on the autism spectrum, by providing plenty of opportunities for imaginative play, turn taking, and being active alongside typical peers.

Trike Town's Recent Supporters

We are delighted to announce that CVS Caremark Charitable Trust has awarded Jowonio a $15,000 grant for Trike Town. The Trust supports non-profit organizations across the country that have programs for children with special needs. More information about their mission can be found at CVS Caremark Charitable Trust.

Many thanks to The J.M. MacDonald Foundation for awarding Jowonio a $5,000 grant to add a water fountain and shade trees to Trike Town. Tricycle riders and staff will be especially grateful for this gift once the hot days of summer arrive. The Foundation supports education, humanities, health, and a variety of social and human services primarily in upstate New York.

The Greene Foundation has once again given a $4,000 gift towards Trike Town. This brings their total contribution for this project to $10,000. The Foundation is based in Bethesda, Maryland and their ongoing support for Jowonio has been invaluable.

We are extremely grateful to The Building Bridges Foundation whose support to Trike Town now totals $7,500. The Foundation was set up by the Denny family of Marcellus NY to support the mission and goals of Autism Speaks and Jowonio. Jack Denny is a graduate of Jowonio’s Star Room. Funds for the Foundation are raised through an annual golf tournament.

The Trike Parade
and Ground-Breaking Event

The official Ground-Breaking for our Trike Town and Amphitheater Project took place on Tuesday, June 3, 2008. The festivities began at 9:45 am, when Jowonio students, staff and families presented a colorful Trike Parade in front of the construction area. Wearing Jowonio "hard hats" made especially for this celebration, more than 150 pre-schoolers proudly rode their brightly decorated traditional and adaptive bikes and trikes on an outlined track in the parking lot. While tremendously exciting for the children, the parade was just a prelude to what they will experience when construction is completed. Our children are thrilled to see the bulldozers and backhoes at work!

The Ground-Breaking ceremony included remarks by Director of Development Peter Irwin, School Director Ellen Barnes and Occupational Therapist Lisa Neville. Program Manager Ann Sutherland, who has secured much of the grant funding for Trike Town, introduced Meg O'Connell and Libby Soderberg of the Allyn Foundation, Jonathan Snow, Jr., of the John Ben Snow Foundation, and John Eberle of the CNY Community Foundation. These major funders of this unique project, along with others who have helped make Trike Town a dream come true, then hoisted decorated shovels and "broke the ground"!

How has Trike Town been funded?

There has been a wonderful response from the Jowonio community and local foundations who have been ongoing supporters of our school and mission. Thank you to all who have contributed to this initiative. See the green box on the left for the complete list of Trike Town contributors, as of June 25, 2009.

Additional contributions are still welcome for ongoing support of Trike Town.
